Florida's Highest-Income Metro Areas

1. Naples-Marco Island ($86,173) tops the state, 32% above the national median. It is also one of the oldest metros, with a median age of 53.1.

2. Key West-Key Largo ($82,430) is a micropolitan area of 81,840 people that out-earns every big Florida metro.

3. Crestview-Fort Walton Beach-Destin ($79,150) is the only top-three area with a younger population, at a median age of 39.2.

Big metros land in the middle. Florida's three largest metros are not its richest. Jacksonville ranks 5th at $77,013, Orlando 7th at $75,611, Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach 9th at $73,481 and Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater 12th at $71,254. Size spreads incomes out: the Miami metro holds both the richest zip codes in the state and many of its lowest-income neighborhoods.

Retirement Money Lifts the Gulf Coast

Two of the top four, Naples and North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota ($78,278), are among Florida's oldest metros, with median ages of 53.1 and 53.6. Retirees with investment and pension income push household incomes up even where fewer people are working.

College Towns and Rural Interior at the Bottom

Tallahassee ($63,078) and Gainesville ($58,946) fall below the national median, partly because large student populations count as low-income households. The lowest incomes are in smaller interior areas: Palatka ($47,256), Clewiston ($48,979), Arcadia ($50,868) and Okeechobee ($52,288).
